I am just copying all files from a Mac partition and dragging on external hdd. But it won"t copy? Any ideas?? Gives me message "The Volume is Wrong format for a backup"

You"ll have to first reformat the external drive as a Mac volume using Disk Utility. Keeping in mind that reformatting will completely erase any Windows related files that may be on that Fat 32 external drive.

it sounds as if you are attempting time machine back up on a PC formatted drive..you may need to reformat the drive for mac and reset up your time machine.

You Nailed it. Yes there is a TM backup folder named Backups.backupdb which is a TM file. Other than that everything is now copied to EXHDD. Thanks for the new learning today

Tompatrick, you might want to format it as exFAT if you are using win vista or newer OS. Simple reason is that fat32 have a 4gb file size limit.

I buy drives that are specifically Mac formatted out of the box for my clients, so as to avoid this confusion.. but sometimes clients will buy the cheapest drive they can find at costco etc, nothing wrong with that except to remember to reformat the drive for mac first... unfortunately that is not written anywhere.
